Our former Sunshine Coast Supa Oldies President - Robbie Glover. (Now residing in Perth W.A.)
Robbie was the leading light in starting a ""rebel"" league of Over 35""s in the 1990""s in the form of a Six A Side Competition. This led to the formation of the Sunshine Coast Supa Oldies and our now very well known, annual, ""Sunshine Coast Supa Oldies Tournament
Robbie was also instrumental in making sure the Local Federation commenced an Over 35 competition in the Sunshine Coast in 1999.
His Past History makes for interesting reading.....so read on.............
Robbie was born in Dunfries in Scotland in 1948.
He was a supporter of Queen of the South and his first senior team was Nth Rovers in the amateur league, where he played as a fullback. In 1968 he moved to Gippsland in Victoria and played for Warragul Utd and also Fortuna FC, playing as a central defender as well as a midfielder. He was invited to joinYallourn FC in the Metro league but had to decline due to work and family commitments. In 1970 he played one season with Concordia Phillip reaching a Cup Final.
Highlights of Robbies career include playing for Scotland against Greece in the International Cup Final in Victoria. Although beaten 3-1, he later found out that the Greek side comprised the majoriy of South Melbourne Hellas! He also played in a side that beat the Morwell falcoms prior to their NSL debut!
Scoring goals was not a big part of Robs career but he did score 2 .both from corners.in one game for Warragul! Also when playing for Fortuna, he remembers an all in brawl against Pegasus, a mainly Maltese side and got 5 weeks suspension...without getting a punch in!
Robbie moved to Buderim in 1978 and joined the 1st team. A highlight at Buderim was when as Manager of the 1st Grade in 1985 they cleaned up the Qantas Cup,Grand Final,Minor Premiership and the Clive Fenn Cup. At the 1987 Golden Oldies Cup he was asked to pick up former World Cup English captain, Bobby Moore...stuck him on the team bus to the Gold Coast and get him in the team photo!Robbie has competed in numerous Oldies Tournaments , here and Overseas and has won a Gold Medal in the World Masters in 1994.
He has been a tireless worker for both Buderim Wanderers SC as well as setting up numerous competitions for the Over 35""s, Over 45""s and running the Six A Sides for over 12 yrs.
It is due to the foundations laid by Robbie that so many people have an outlet of sport and friendship to go to on the Sunshine Coast.
He is a well respected member of the Soccer community both locally and nationally and it is only fitting he should receive the first LIFE MEMBERSHIP to an organisation he has been dedicated to over so many years.
Well done Robbie.....we""re all proud of you and in your debt.
